SUCCESS STORIES!

Debbie Dillion from the West End School District in Naturita partnered with Regional Nurse Stacie Schreiner to bring Healthy Lifestyles to some of her students. In February they presented 5.2.1.0 and instruction on how to read a nutritional label to the Entreprenuership class of 25 students. Their goal was to use this new found knowledge to make better choices on which foods to sell in their school store. In the workshop they compared current items with potential healthier options and discussed the differences. It was a great success!! Great job Debbie Dillion of West End School District.

Current Policy Highlights

House Bill 2229
Student-to-School Nurse Ratio Improvement Act of 2011.
Introduced by Cynthia McCarthy of N.Y. in June 2011.
Summary: The Bill would provide the framework for funding to be available in the form of grants to increase nursing support in the underserved school setting. Schools that apply for the grants and demonstrate "need" will decrease the ratio to 1 nurse: 750 students. Within twenty-four months there will be a report submitted by the Secretary of Education to Congress describing the result of decreased ratios and improvements in health and student learning of the schools that receive the funding. (H.R.2229, 2011). The schools who receive the funding will be responsible to collect data to provide evidence that improved ratios have a positive impact on health.
Current status of Bill 2229: Currently the Bill has been referred to the House subcommittee of Energy and Commerce. Colorado is not currently one of the 12 co-supporters of this Bill however, our own Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette of the Colorado House of Representatives sits on the Energy and Commerce subcommittee. She is currently a supporter of the related House Bill 1692 Asthma Management Plan in School Act.
