Welcome to the first posting of the NEW blog for school nurses in Colorado. This blog will be updated by the Regional Nurse Specialists and Kathy Patrick, of the Colorado Department of Education. On this site we will discuss "hot topics", best practice, research articles, and current events related to your professional nursing practice.
Check the site often for a list of Professional Development opportunities, and in Mid December look for online registration for the Regional Nurse’s Mental/Behavioral Health trainings—these will cover the latest state-wide initiatives and promise to offer solutions to many of your concerns related to addressing student’s mental health needs!
We also will have monthly poll questions located at the bottom of the screen, and your participation will help guide the type and amount of resources we hope to provide related to practice issues. Please use this blog to link directly to the Colorado School Nurse (CDE) website.
Our intention is to keep you informed through this blog that will serve as a newsletter from your Regional Nurses. We will be posting monthly and will include "Kathy's Korner" from Kathy Patrick.
We welcome your feedback and hope you enjoy the journey into a new era of information dissemination.

KATHY'S KORNER
Happy Holidays to everyone! I can’t believe that we are past Thanksgiving and the first semester will soon be behind us. I have heard from many school nurses that this has been a very challenging year. Let’s hope that next semester is better for all.
Last year the Regional Nurses published a bimonthly newsletter that was well received. This year the decision was to change the format to a Blog. Now, I am still having difficulty comprehending how a blog works but I have been assured that this is the new way to communicate. We have not gone on Facebook or Twitter but who knows what the future will bring!
Speaking of next semester, we have a lot of exciting professional development planned. Cathy White and I will be conducting the regional workshops again. As soon as details are finalized and the registration site completed, you will be able to register online. The regional nurses have also been working hard to create a very dynamic and comprehensive training on mental health. They will have numerous trainings around the state. Make sure that both of these trainings are a priority for you to attend.
We are also scheduling a HANDS Diabetes training that will occur in the Denver area sometime in early March. The Diabetes Care and Prevention Unit at CDPHE has generously contributed funds to bring HANDS to the metro area.
Expanding your professional knowledge and staying current in school nursing practice is your responsibility under the NASN Scope and Standards of Practice.
We look forward to seeing you next semester! Happy Holidays!
